A timeline of Brian DeVries' arrests, treatments

Wednesday August 13, 2003

1978 DeVries first arrested, for molesting his landlord's 5-year-old son.

1993 DeVries convicted of molesting the 8-year-old son of a woman he dated, the ninth boy he had been convicted of molesting.

1997 DeVries finishes his criminal sentence but is committed to the state maximum-security psychiatric hospital at Atascadero under the state's Sexually Violent Predator Program.

Aug. 2001 DeVries chooses to be surgically castrated.

Feb. 24, 2003 A judge approves a supervised release for DeVries in Santa Clara County, the last place he was convicted.

March 3 Gov. Gray Davis publicly opposes DeVries' release.

May 2 Plans to house DeVries at a San Jose motel collapse after neighbors and city leaders voice outrage.

June 18 Judge orders officials to look outside Santa Clara County after 60 landlords refuse to house DeVries.

July 10 Judge orders state to free DeVries at the end of the month to his father's home outside Olympia, Wash. The decision alarms Washington and California officials, who say moving DeVries across state lines makes them powerless to monitor him.

July 25 Judge gives California officials until Aug. 10 to find supervised housing and treatment for DeVries.

Aug. 6 Officials announce they will move DeVries to a trailer on the grounds of a medium-security prison in Soledad.

Aug. 8 The city of Soledad asks a judge to postpone his decision to release DeVries there. Judge delays his release until at least Aug. 12.

Aug. 12 Over the protest of local residents and officials, judge rules that DeVries will be housed in Soledad.

Aug. 13 DeVries tells The Associated Press that he understands the outrage among his new neighbors and promises to lay low in his first home as a free man.
