Marine recruit dies after rash spreads

SAN DIEGO (AP) An 18-year-old Marine Corps recruit from
Greenfield died Sunday after seeking treatment for an ankle rash.
Private Miguel Zavala, who had completed 23 training days, went
to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Branch Medical Clinic for
treatment of a rash on his left ankle. The rash spread to the rest
of his body and Zavala was taken to the Naval Medical Center San
Diego, where he died at 1:01 p.m., MCRD spokesman Lt. Mike Friel
said.
The cause of death is under investigation and pending the
results of an autopsy.
