LOS ANGELES (AP) Mayor James Hahn returned from a 10-day trip
to Asia after signing nearly a dozen agreements to boost tourism
and commerce here.
Hahn arrived at Los Angeles International Airport late Tuesday
after meeting with leaders in China, South Korea and Japan on a
six-city tour. He also had hoped to reach an agreement that would
bring a pair of giant pandas to the Los Angeles Zoo, but he landed
a more exotic attraction a rare Chinese golden monkey.
Hahn and Chinese leaders reached a deal with a Hong Kong company
for increasing security at the Port of Los Angeles. The measures
include tamper-proof locks for Los Angeles-bound cargo.
``This agreement will elevate security standards for containers
moving between Hong Kong and Los Angeles,'' Hahn said. ``My highest
priority is reducing the risk at the West Coast's largest port.''
He also signed several agreements with Asian ports and shipping
firms regarding environmental initiatives. The ports of Los Angeles
and Shanghai will now share technology intended to improve air and
water quality while other steps will be taken to reduce pollution
from port operations.
The agreements are meant to create jobs and bring millions of
dollars in new business to Los Angeles. During his trip, Hahn was
flanked by business leaders and celebrities such as Arnold
Schwarzenegger and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Kazuhisa Ishii.
