San Miguel Meats recalls chickens incorrectly labeled as hens

Friday February 14, 2003

LOS ANGELES (AP) San Miguel Meats is recalling about 152,000 pounds of fresh and frozen young chickens that were incorrectly branded as Cornish game hens.

The company is voluntarily recalling 9- to 19-pound boxes of La Reina, Godorniz Para Asar and Small Chicken Wog, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said Friday. Each box bears the number ``EST. P-4937'' inside the USDA seal of inspection.

The products were produced from Sept. 4 to Jan. 2 and distributed to stores in California and Arizona.

Consumers should return the product to the point of purchase, said Garry L. McKee, the FSIS administrator.

Consumers with food safety questions can call the USDA Meat and Poultry hot line at 1-800-535-4555.
