Houston wins AHL championship with Game 7 win over Hamilton

Thursday June 12, 2003

HAMILTON, Ontario (AP) Rickard Wallin and Stephane Veilleux scored as the Houston Aeros won the Calder Cup with a 3-0 victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs in Game 7 on Thursday night.

Johan Holmqvist won chosen as the playoff MVP award after recording his first shutout of the postseason. The Aeros won their first American Hockey League championship in the team's second season.

Clinging to a 2-0 in the third period, Holmqvist made a nice toe save on Bulldogs defenseman Ron Hainsey and later stopped Raffi Torres in close.

Rastislav Pavlikovsky made it 3-0 with a power-play goal at 14:38 of the third period.

An AHL record crowd of 17,428 was in attendance.
