Heins acquired by Penguins

Sunday February 09, 2003

PITTSBURGH (AP) The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired defenseman Shawn Heins from the San Jose Sharks for a conditional draft pick Sunday.

Heins, 29, had one assist and nine penalty minutes in 20 games this season with the Sharks. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Heins has three goals and 10 points in 81 career NHL games since signing with the Sharks as a free agent in 1997.

A former teammate of Pittsburgh goaltender Johan Hedberg with Kentucky of the AHL during the 1999-2000 season, Heins set the record for the fastest recorded slap shot (106 mph) in professional hockey history during the 1999 United Hockey League All-Star skills competition.
