Mighty Ducks 3, Coyotes 1

Friday October 03, 2003

PHOENIX (AP) Sergei Fedorov scored his first goal in an Anaheim uniform Thursday night as the Mighty Ducks beat the Phoenix Coyotes 3-1 in preseason action.

Craig Johnson and Joffrey Lupul also scored for Anaheim, unbeaten in its last five preseason games (4-0-1). Landon Wilson scored for the Coyotes, who have lost consecutive home games by a combined score of 9-2.

Fedorov gave Anaheim a 2-1 lead at 3:59 of the second period when he took a pass from Sandis Ozolinsh while facing away from the goal and backhanded a soft shot off Phoenix goalie Brian Boucher.

Lupul extended the lead to 3-1 at 14:32 of the period when he backhanded a shot from the left side of the crease for his second goal in as many games.

Anaheim took a 1-0 lead when Johnson stuffed a rebound of his own shot past Boucher 3:52 into the game. Wilson tied it at 16:48 of the period, charging the net after leaving the penalty box and batting a knee-high rebound past Anaheim goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

Phoenix defenseman Brad Ference was struck in the face by the puck late in the second period and left the ice clutching a towel to his right cheek. Ference is day-to-day. Anaheim defenseman Keith Carney injured his right foot in the first period and also is day-to-day.
