Dodgers may soon be back in private hands
LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Dodgers, run by the O'Malley
family for almost a half-century, may be back in private hands
soon. News Corp. has reached an agreement to sell the team to
Boston real estate developer Frank McCourt.

USC beats Stanford with strong offensive effort
LOS ANGELES No. 9 Southern California built a big early lead
and went on to a 44-21 victory over Stanford. Matt Leinart threw
three scoring passes to Mike Williams and freshman LenDale White
ran for a pair of touchdowns as the Trojans passed and ran
virtually at will in the first half to build a 41-14 lead over the
Cardinal.

UCLA rallies to beat Arizona with interception return
TUSCON, Ariz. Defensive tackle Rodney Leisle returned an
interception 55 yards for the winning touchdown as the Bruins
rallied to beat Arizona 24-21. It was the Wildcats' 13th straight
Pac-10 home loss.

U.S. defeats Canada for third place in World Cup
CARSON, Calif. With third place in the World Cup secured, Mia
Hamm and Kristine Lilly did what they nearly always do: lead. Key
components in the United States' 3-1 victory over Canada, Hamm and
Lilly led their teammates to each sideline, clapping their hands
above their heads, waving, throwing kisses, even pounding their
hearts. It was not the prize they set out for, but it was still
worth a celebration.
