Los Angeles/Anaheim honored as best sports city

Wednesday August 13, 2003

LOS ANGELES (AP) Even without an NFL team and the failure of the Lakers to win a fourth straight NBA championship, the Los Angeles/Anaheim area has been selected as the country's best sports city for the past year by the Sporting News.

The magazine it will present the award during a ceremony before Saturday night's game in Anaheim between the Angels and Detroit Tigers.

The Angels won their first World Series last October, and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks advanced to the Stanley Cup finals in June before losing to the New Jersey Devils.

In addition, Southern California was one of the country's finest college football teams last fall with Trojans quarterback Carson Palmer winning the Heisman Trophy.

The magazine announced Wednesday that New York/Long Island/New Jersey had been picked as the second-best sports city for the past year, followed by Oakland/San Francisco/San Jose, Philadelphia, Dallas/Fort Worth, Boston, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Tampa/St. Petersburg, Detroit and Denver.

Boston won the award last year.
