Sacramento signs Anthony Peeler

Friday August 15, 2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Guard Anthony Peeler signed with the Sacramento Kings on Friday.

Peeler, an 11-year NBA veteran, spent the last 5{ seasons with Minnesota. He averaged 7.7 points, 3.0 assists and 2.9 rebounds last season, playing in every game and becoming a starter for the Timberwolves after the All-Star break.

Minnesota traded Peeler to Milwaukee on June 27, and the Bucks waived him 10 days later. Peeler would have made $3.7 million with the Timberwolves this season, but Minnesota replaced him with Latrell Sprewell, acquired in a trade with New York.

Peeler also has played for Vancouver and the Los Angeles Lakers, who made him the 15th overall draft choice in 1992.

The signing could signal the end of Sacramento's pursuit of guard Jim Jackson, who revitalized his career after joining the Kings early last season. Several teams are interested in Jackson, and Kings owner Joe Maloof has said the two-time Pacific Division champions probably can't afford Jackson.

Peeler is the 11th player under contract to the Kings for next season. Sacramento also signed forward Darius Songaila and acquired All-Star center Brad Miller from Indiana while trading away Scot Pollard, Hedo Turkoglu and Keon Clark.
