San Jose St. 55, Hawaii 54
Sunday February 16, 2003
HONOLULU (AP) Keith West scored on a driving layup with two
seconds left Saturday night to give San Jose State to a 55-54
victory over Hawaii.
The Rainbow Warriors (13-8, 6-7 Western Athletic Conference) had
a chance to win it with one tick left, but Mark Campbell's shot
rimmed out. His rebound and follow went in, but officials ruled it
came after the final buzzer.
It was the second time this season the Spartans (6-15, 3-9)
upset Hawaii and, this time, it broke the Rainbow Warriors' 24
consecutive home court winning streak.
In the frantic final seconds, Scott Sonnenburg, hit a pair of
3-pointers his only points of the game to give San Jose State
leads of 50-47 and 53-52. But Campbell countered with three-point
play and a pair of free throws with 11:6 left go to put Hawaii
ahead 54-53.
West took the ensuing inbound pass and drove in for the
game-winner.
The game was close throughout with neither team able to build
more than a seven-point lead. There were 14 lead changes and as
many ties.
Keith Everage led San Jose State with 12 points with Brandon
Hawkins adding 11. The smaller Spartans dominated the boards,
31-22, including 15 off the offensive boards.
Phil Martin was Hawaii's top scorer with 17 points before
fouling out. Carl English, the WAC's leading scorer (20.6),
finished with nine points on 3-for-15 shooting, missing all seven
of his 3-pointers. In the first meeting between the two teams,
English was held to a season-low six points.
