Mariners 3, Giants 1

Sunday March 30, 2003

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Ryan Franklin pitched four solid innings and the Seattle Mariners beat the San Francisco Giants 3-1 Sunday in the final spring training game for both teams.

Franklin allowed one run. He and five relievers combined on an eight-hitter.

``His curveball was really breaking today,'' Mariners manager Bob Melvin said. ``There was a big gap when he threw it, and that really impressed me.''

Franklin walked two and struck out one. The right-hander is scheduled to make his first start of the regular season April 4 in Texas.

``I gained a lot of confidence today in using my curve,'' Franklin said. ``My game is pitching for contact. A curve gives me another pitch to use as a way to keep opponents off balance.''

Marquis Grissom homered for San Francisco. Giants prospect Jesse Foppert gave up two runs one earned in five innings. He struck out five and took the loss.

The right-hander attended the University of San Francisco and grew up in nearby Napa.

``He pitches like he's been up in the majors for 10 years,'' manager Felipe Alou said.

The Mariners scored first when John Olerud led off the fourth inning with a double and came home on Mike Cameron's single.

Seattle got another run in the fourth when Cameron stole second and scored on a wild pitch and a throwing error by catcher Benito Santiago. John Mabry added an RBI triple in the seventh.

Right-hander Giovanni Carrara, signed Friday, made his first appearance for the Mariners and pitched a scoreless seventh.

Barry Bonds got the day off.
