Bonds homers for first hit of season

Wednesday April 02, 2003

SAN DIEGO (AP) Barry Bonds hit a three-run homer against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night for his first hit of the season.

Bonds' homer, on a 2-1 pitch from rookie Mike Bynum, went an estimated 463 feet. It was several feet short of hitting the base of the giant scoreboard 29 rows beyond the right-field wall at Qualcomm Stadium.

Bonds was 0-for-5 with three walks and three strikeouts going into the at-bat.

The San Francisco slugger hit a grand slam off the base of the scoreboard on June 5 last season.
