Omaha 8, Fresno 2
Friday June 20, 2003
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) Five home runs carried the Omaha Royals to
an 8-2 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies during a Pacific Coast
League contest Thursday.
Grizzlies right-hander Brian Powell, who entered the game with
the fourth-best ERA in the PCL (2.75), gave up back-to-back home
runs to Benny Agbayani and Jed Hansen in the second inning.
Jarrod Patterson then hit a three-run homer in the third, and
Mike Kelly followed with another solo shot in the fifth, giving the
Royals a 6-0 lead. Julius Matos hit the fifth home run in the sixth
inning.
Altogether, the homers accounted for seven of the Royals' runs.
The feat tied a Grizzlies' franchise record for most home runs
given up by a single pitcher. Joe Nathan was the last Fresno
pitcher to give up five home runs on May 27, 2001. Powell's ERA
dropped to 3.32 when he left the game after six innings.
The Grizzlies got on the board with a home run of their own when
Cody Ransom launched a two-run homer in the fifth.
The Royals now have 74 home runs this year, second-most in the
PCL.
